Solar energy makes Volvo dealers climate-neutral

Volvo Trucks

Volvo Trucks has inaugurated its first climate-neutral dealership facility. The inauguration took place in Verona, Italy. With the help of solar cells on the building’s roof, more energy will be produced than is needed to heat up the offices and workshops.

“When we decided to build an entirely new facility, we wanted to make sure we integrated pro-environmental technologies from the ground up,” says Marco Lazzoni, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks’ operations in Italy. “And what is cleaner than solar energy?”

Green electricity
Solar energy produced at the Volvo Truck Center in Verona will be supplied to the local power grid, thus generating an income from the electricity that the dealership facility itself does not need. In return, the dealership will only purchase green electricity from solar, wind-power or hydro-power sources. Heating of the premises will take place using fossil methane gas. However, the surplus electricity that the solar panels generate more than compensates for the carbon dioxide emissions caused by burning the methane gas.

Climate-neutral operation
“Here at Volvo Trucks we work intensively to ensure that ever-increasing proportions of our operations are climate-neutral. With the new facility, we’re carrying our dedication to the climate out to the dealership level,” says Lars Mårtensson, environment affairs manager at Volvo Trucks.

Volvo Trucks’ aim is that more dealers should follow Verona’s example. It is not likely that all will follow the path of solar cells, but there are alternative ways to proceed.

“Energy efficiency and a larger proportion of energy from alternative sources are the foundation of our work. The exact measures that are most suitable for implementation are determined by local conditions.”

Over the past few years, Volvo Trucks has implemented a range of measures that help reduce the environmental imprint of its operations and products. For instance, the company’s largest production facility in Ghent in Belgium became the world’s first climate-neutral vehicle factory in 2007. That same year, Volvo Trucks demonstrated 7 trucks each running on a different renewable fuel. This past spring the world’s first heavy-duty hybrid refuse trucks were handed over to customers for field testing.

“These activities show that even a player in heavy industry can reduce climate impact to a major extent – from both its products and its facilities. What is more, we have several additional factories that will also soon become climate-neutral,” says Lars Mårtensson.

2009 RDX Adds New Features to an Already Impressive Mix of Performance and Utility

The evolution of the luxury performance SUV took a significant leap forward with the arrival of the Acura RDX turbocharged crossover vehicle. The immediate response of power from Acura’s first-ever turbocharged engine, combined with the breakthrough technology of Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™), delivers adrenaline pumping performance in an efficient SUV package. In its first full year of sales, the RDX captured 38-percent of the Entry Premium SUV segment, proving that its unique blend of performance and superior handling hit home with buyers looking for more than just the status quo from an SUV.

In addition, AcuraLink® Real-time traffic system includes coverage for yet another major metropolitan area–bringing the total to 77 areas.

“The RDX continues to gain momentum with customers in the Entry Premium SUV segment,” said Dick Colliver, vice president sales, “It is a critical addition to our lineup and it is an engaging vehicle from the standpoint of driving dynamics and technology.”

The RDX was designed as the ideal vehicle for drivers with energetic lifestyles who are in need of a compact, sporty and responsive weekday ride, and a weekend getaway vehicle with the versatility to match their diverse and active recreational lifestyles.

True to Acura’s leadership in the application of advanced technology, the RDX incorporates a class-leading array of features that keep passengers informed, entertained and in control. In addition to its sophisticated powertrain, the RDX is available with the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, AcuraLink® Satellite Communication System, Acura Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink™ along with AUX jack connectivity for MP3 external music players.

The RDX also incorporates leading safety technologies based on the fundamentals of Acura’s “Safety Through Innovation” initiative including advanced front, side and side curtain airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist ™ (VSA™), ABS with Brake Assist and an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) front body structure.

Powertrain
The RDX is equipped with a turbocharged 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve in-line four-cylinder engine incorporating computer-controlled i-VTEC™ “intelligent” intake/exhaust valve actuation system that delivers enhanced performance across a broad powerband while still delivering superior fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions. The heart of the RDX’s performance is its Variable Flow Turbo (VFT) that delivers an unusually broad powerband with virtually no lag in throttle response. The Variable Flow Turbo works in concert with i-VTEC to deliver outstanding acceleration while driving at a variety of speeds.

Rated output for the RDX engine is 240 horsepower at 6000 rpm with 260 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm. The RDX has an EPA fuel economy rating of 17/22 mpg* (city/highway) and meets the U.S. EPA’s stringent TIER 2 - BIN 5 and CARB LEV-2 ULEV exhaust emissions standards.

A performance-minded 5-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift is standard on the RDX. An electronically-controlled Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system works with the transmission to execute exceptionally quick and smooth gear changes. The Sequential SportShift transmission can function as a conventional automatic transmission or, at the driver’s option, can be controlled manually via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Chassis
Acura’s exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™) system is standard on the RDX, helping it to maximize available traction while improving handling balance and responsiveness. SH-AWD™ distributes optimum torque not only between the front and rear axles, but also between the left and right rear wheels while also being able to overdrive the rear wheels. The system’s direct yaw control utilizes torque vectoring to help reduce understeer thus enhancing steering accuracy and adding to total cornering ability.

Precise and responsive handling is further aided by fully independent front and rear suspension. A MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension system is tuned for compliant control, and the suspension is assisted by large-diameter front and rear stabilizer bars for flatter cornering. Standard to the RDX is Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control to further enhance vehicle controllability and grip.

Exterior/Interior
RDX exterior styling further emphasizes the SUV’s sporty athleticism. Standard 18-inch wheels and tires, large wheel arches, aggressively raked body sides, steeply raked windscreen, and a short rear overhang generate an RDX with a taut and muscular presence. A unique rear hatch, finished with a replaceable panel to reduce the cost of accident repair, allows for a smooth transition of the body to the rear bumper. Such bodywork transition delivers a more custom look as well as eases loading and unloading of cargo. Available for 2009 are new exterior colors including: Basque Red Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, Grigio Metallic and Palladium Metallic.

Inside the RDX, the front seats feature a high outward visibility “eye point” that provides a confident field of view. For 2009, a 4-way adjustable power front seat is standard for the front passenger. The 3-passenger rear seat has a 60/40 split-folding capability and, when folded flat, significantly expands the load area and increases the total cargo volume to 60.6 cubic feet.

Multiple interior storage compartments are positioned throughout the interior, including a lockable dual-level center console (that is large enough to accommodate a briefcase) located conveniently between the front seats.

The RDX features an array of electronic features that set it apart from the competition. Standard features include a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a Multi-Information Display (MID), LED backlit gauges with progressive illumination and Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink™ mobile telephone connectivity. Also standard is an impressive 360-watt 7-speaker Acura Premium Sound System with a multi-format 6-disc changer, AM/FM tuner, XM® Satellite Radio, and the convenience of an AUX input jack for the easy connection of MP3 audio devices such as an iPod®.

Just one option package–the Technology Package–is offered on the 2009 RDX. The Technology Package heightens the RDX’s appeal with tech-savvy customers through a range of advanced features. The centerpiece is a 10-speaker Acura/ELS Surround™ Premium Sound System designed by 6-time Grammy® award winning sound engineer Elliot Scheiner. When playing DVD-Audio discs (DVD-A is 500 times clearer than traditional CD), this advanced 410-watt system delivers eight discreet audio channels (up from the usual two channels) to create an exceptionally accurate listening experience. With its multi-format 6-disc DVD-Audio changer, AM/FM tuner and XM® Satellite Radio, along with AUX jack connectivity, the Acura/ELS Surround™ system is exceptionally versatile and powerful.

The Technology Package also incorporates numerous information and communications features including Acura Navigation System and AcuraLink® Satellite Communication System with Real-time traffic. Furthermore, AcuraLink® allows for 2-way communication between Acura and the vehicle, thus providing customers with the latest information and service requirements specific to their vehicle.

The Real-time traffic feature of the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™ can display up-to-the-minute traffic information including flow, accident and construction on freeways in 77 metropolitan areas–an increase of an additional market for 2008. When the transmission is placed in reverse, the Navigation screen displays a video image from a rearview camera to make parking easier.

Safety
The RDX’s technology leadership also extends to safety, where a long list of advanced safety technologies, including an Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) front body structure make the RDX one of only two luxury SUVs in its class to achieve both the U.S. government’s top 5-star rating for both frontal and side impact crash tests, along with a “TOP SAFETY PICK” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The ACE™ body employs a network of interconnected front frame structures that work to absorb and redirect collision forces away from the passenger cabin while helping improve crash compatibility with vehicles of different sizes in a frontal collision. A special frame member located below the front bumper is designed to engage the front bumper of a lower vehicle, allowing the bumper systems of both vehicles to attenuate crash energy more efficiently.

In addition, a specially engineered hood, collapsible hood hinges, breakaway wiper pivots and other features help reduce the chance of pedestrian injury in the event of a collision with the vehicle.

Inside the RDX is a full complement of passive safety features. Key technologies include the latest generation of dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags for the driver and front passenger, plus side airbags for the driver and front passenger along with side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor for all outboard occupants. The passenger’s side airbag features an Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) to prevent airbag deployment if a child or small-stature adult leans into the deployment path. LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) child seat mounting systems allow the quick and secure installation of a child seats.

Like all Acura models, the 2009 RDX is covered by a comprehensive 4-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and a 6-year/70,000 miles powertrain limited warranty. Additional ownership benefits include Acura Total Luxury Care® (TLC®), which provides free 24-hour roadside assistance, concierge service, and trip routing.

Safe Kids Program Hits Major Milestone–One Million Seats Checked for Proper Installation

LOS ANGELES — Safe Kids Buckle Up, the child passenger safety program of Safe Kids USA sponsored by General Motors and Chevrolet, has reached a milestone no other program can claim: one million child safety seats checked for proper installation.

“A Safe Kids child seat inspection provides hands-on training for parents and caregivers,” said Mitch Stoller, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide.” At about 30 minutes per inspection, the milestone we are celebrating today represents more than 500,000 volunteer hours — or 57 years of one person working around the clock. Our thousands of volunteers are the backbone of Safe Kids Buckle Up and they work tirelessly to help make sure the children who come to a checkup event are safer when they leave than when they arrived.”

The one millionth seat will be checked today at an event at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. The event is open to the public and 150 children from the Los Angeles Urban League Head Start and State Preschool are scheduled to have their seats inspected. Nearly 200 more car seat checkup events are being held through the weekend at Chevrolet and other GM dealerships, and at community locations around the country in celebration of the millionth seat milestone.

“Keeping all children safer in vehicles is one of our top priorities,” said Nicole R. Nason, administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “Programs like Safe Kids Buckle Up have helped to change the culture of car seat safety in the United States and have been essential in protecting our most precious passengers.”

Significant progress has been made since 1997 when the program checked its first car seat. Statistics from NHTSA show a 25 percent drop in vehicle crash fatalities for children under the age of 5 from 1997 to 2006 (the latest year with available data).

More good news has been seen in restraint use. Car seats have saved the lives of an estimated 3,800 children ages 0 to 4 from 1997 to 2006. Of the children in fatal crashes where restraint use was known, 46 percent were unrestrained in 1997.  This number decreased to 25 percent in 2006.

“Safe Kids USA and General Motors have been leaders in child occupant protection,” said Mark V. Rosenker, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board. “As we have said before, the Safe Kids Buckle Up program has given families across the country the peace of mind that comes with knowing how to properly secure their children in a vehicle. Checking a million seats through the Safe Kids Buckle Up program has likely resulted in hundreds of lives being saved because of the proper use of car seats and booster seats.”

The partnership between Safe Kids USA and General Motors is the longest-running corporate/nonprofit program of its kind, addressing safety for children in and around vehicles. In 2004, Chevrolet became the lead GM brand for the relationship. Safe Kids has more than 600 state and local coalitions and chapters, staffed mostly by volunteers, who provide injury prevention programs to communities throughout the country free of charge.

“Chevy dealers have become leaders in child safety as they work with Safe Kids Buckle Up to bring this lifesaving program to their communities,” said Ed Peper, North America vice president, Chevrolet. “We know a million seats isn’t the finish line, but it’s a very good start.”

Safe Kids Buckle Up has expanded from child safety seat checkups to include a variety of programs to help keep children safer in and around vehicles. The program has distributed approximately 365,000 seats to families in need, deployed a fleet of more than 130 Chevrolet Mobile Car Seat Checkup Vans, established more than 450 permanent child safety seat inspection stations, created a new Automotive Safety Patch program with Chevrolet and the Cub Scouts, and launched the Spot the Tot and Never Leave Your Child Alone programs across the country. The program also works to upgrade state child passenger safety laws. All together, the Safe Kids Buckle Up program activities have touched nearly 15 million people.

“Since the beginning, our goal has been to reach parents, caregivers and children across the country,” said Rod Gillum, GM vice president, corporate responsibility and diversity. “We are proud to see Safe Kids Buckle Up reach this important milestone, while recognizing that the job of protecting children must continue to be a priority. Safe Kids is a great partner, and their experts have made Safe Kids Buckle Up a truly dynamic program.”

Audi concentrates on race preparation

First Qualifying for Le Mans 24 Hours
· Audi R10 TDI provisionally 4th, 5th and 6th on the grid
· Tyre testing and good set-up more important than lap times

Ingolstadt/Le Mans – Audi Sport Team Joest concentrated fully on race preparations during the first qualifying session for this weekend’s Le Mans 24 Hours (start on Saturday at 3 p.m.). The three Audi R10 TDI prototypes are fourth, fifth and sixth on the provisional starting grid.

As it was raining during the official test day at Le Mans and similar weather is also predicted for Thursday’s second qualifying session, last year’s winners decided not to go out for the fastest lap times with a special qualifying set-up. Instead, the Audi team worked intensively on the set-up and the aerodynamics and tested various tyre specifications for the race. In addition, all nine Audi drivers completed their mandatory laps in darkness.

The fastest time (3m 24.105s) was set by Allan McNish in the Audi R10 TDI with start number 2 shortly after 10 p.m. Mike Rockenfeller was just 182 thousandths of a second slower in the number 3 R10 TDI. The fastest lap at the wheel of the number 1 R10 TDI was recorded by Marco Werner.

Technically, there were no significant problems on Wednesday. The sole incident was a slight contact by Mike Rockenfeller with a LM P2 car in the first chicane, which apart from a spin had no further consequences.

For the second qualifying session on Thursday evening, the three Audi R10 TDI prototypes will already be fitted with their race engines.

Quotes after first Qualifying

Dr Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport):
“Today we were certain it would stay dry, so we focused on working out a good set-up. Despite some red flags we completed a comprehensive programme with all three cars and found a good set-up for all three cars. If it is not dry tomorrow, at least we are sorted out from this side.”

Dindo Capello (Audi R10 TDI #2): “It is impressive how fast the times have become at Le Mans. We are happy about the work we have done. We didn’t go at all for a good lap time in qualifying because we knew anyway that it would have been not really possible for us to fight for pole position. We just concentrated on setting up our car for the race and make it as easy to drive as we could. We don’t have to forget that this is the longest race in the world. One fast lap does not count but to be consistent in the race.”

Tom Kristensen (Audi R10 TDI #2): “It was great to have a dry qualifying. The average speed was almost 250kph which is obviously very impressive. I know what we have to do and that’s what we keep working at. We know what the car can do and obviously we are just making sure that we do the 24 hours without any issues. That is our target and we have seen before that we can beat faster competition. So that remains our target here.”

Allan McNish (Audi R10 TDI #2): “Tonight was the same picture we’ve had in the LMS this season where Peugeot are faster over one lap – but I have to congratulate them with that mighty impressive lap time. It was clear we could not fight them in qualifying so we focussed very much on race set-up during the sessions. In race trim we’ll be much closer to our qualifying pace. I was pleased with the balance of our car which improved as the circuit’s grip level increased. We got a good feeling on full tanks too. The second row of the grid was the best we could have hoped for.”

Lucas Luhr (Audi R10 TDI #3): “Now it’s getting really exciting. The whole team has worked so hard during the last months and now the race is coming closer and closer. As we saw today we are facing very strong competitors, but this we already knew before. We focused on our set-up for the race and are looking good so far. Everything else we will see – latest on Sunday at 3 p.m.”

Alexandre Prémat (Audi R10 TDI #3): “I am very happy about today. Unfortunately the gap to our competitors is quite big at the moment but this we will try to sort out during the race. I feel very confident in the Audi R10 TDI during daylight and also in the night. Everything with the team, the engineers, the mechanics as well as with Mike (Rockenfeller) and Lucas (Luhr) is going on very well which makes me optimistic for the challenges to come.”

Mike Rockenfeller (Audi R10 TDI #3): “It’s nice that we could finally get into the car since we are already here at Le Mans since Monday. It’s always something special when you drive out of the pits in the night. I’m quite happy with the elements we worked out today. I think we are well sorted out for the race day – and that’s what it was all about today.”

Frank Biela (Audi R10 TDI #1): “We knew that Peugeot would be quicker. That’s why we’ve focused on the race set-up right from the beginning which is what we did consequently. The car felt good. Marco (Werner) has made some more changes on the car. I hope it was a step in the right direction.”

Emanuele Pirro (Audi R10 TDI #1): “We have done some work which we haven’t been able to do in the pre-test owing to the bad weather. It was quite a good day. The car’s set-up has been sorted out to 80 per cent already. We only need to look at a few details. I’m reasonably happy.”

Marco Werner (Audi R10 TDI #1): “I didn’t do that many laps. Actually, I only clocked up miles in the dark after having done my mandatory laps previously. However, red flags prevented me from doing consistent times although the sector times have been quite okay. At the end, we’ve tried something that was rather negative. I flat-spotted one tyre. Thereafter, we wanted to try something again, but then there had been another red flag. So we can’t draw that many conclusions.”

Ralf Jüttner (Technical Director Audi Sport Team Joest): “We ran through our programme. The weather was good. We had no problems. So everything is fine. The competition is as fast as we expected and feared. They did exactly the times which we expected after the test day. The second part of qualifying showed how it might look like in the race: In race conditions the times were very close together. We did, as usual, not care about qualifying, did only very limited runs with new tyres and always ran with a lot of fuel. As usual we concentrated on the race set-up. And I think we are well sorted out.”
