When Ford launched the redesigned Escape and Mariner compact CUVs last year, the bodies and interiors were all new but the powertrains were largely carried over from the first-generation models. For the 2009 model year, that issue has been addressed with thorough upgrades to both four- and six-cylinder engines. We’ll talk more about the engine upgrades next week after we drive them. In the meantime we got an early look at the new automatic transmission for the non-hybrid models. The previous four-speed unit is replaced with an all-new six speed unit dubbed the 6F35. Toyota will reveal the new Prius at January’s Detroit Motor Show. The car will be taking cues from the Hybrid X which was seen at the Geneva Motor Show last year.
The new Prius will be bigger, but it will also have lower emissions, more power and 13 percent better economy.
Citroen is also trying a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit for the C2 and C3 hatches. The 100bhp version will even emit only 100g/km of CO2.

The interiors of two production vehicles were stripped out so that specialists from Visteon and 3M could fashion new interiors featuring in-development, production-ready technologies from the two suppliers.
“Two vehicles have been developed - one for North America and one for Europe - with similar technologies but different styling on each,” said Joe Stroh, Business Development Manager for 3M Automotive Division.
