China ponders WTO auto parts report

The Chinese government said yesterday that it is studying an interim report issued by the World Trade Organization on complaints by the European Union, United States and Canada about China’s tax measures on auto parts imports.

China is carefully studying the report and is preparing to submit its opinions to the WTO panel, said a government statement issued by the Chinese mission to WTO.

China respects the dispute settlement procedures of the WTO and will not make comments on the case until the final ruling is made, it said. A WTO panel ruled on Wednesday that China improperly taxes imported auto parts at the same rate as finished autos. The US, EU, and Canada said that deters auto makers from making cars in China using imported parts.

The decision is officially only an “interim ruling,” with a final decision to be released later this year, but no panel has ever changed its findings between an interim and final decision.

Zhou Shijian, an official with China’s WTO research body, told the Global Times that China’s practice of levying the same tariffs on the imported auto parts that account for at least 60 percent of the car cost as whole cars to prevent the importers dodging taxes falls in line with the WTO rules.

The tariffs are meant to stop auto makers from importing cars in sections and then assembling them.

Aptera crushing lots of its cars

first Who Aptera are:

The first Operating Prototype achieved over 230 Miles per gallon!
Five years ago, Aptera’s founder Steve Fambro endeavored to design and build a passenger vehicle that was safe, comfortable, and more fuel-efficient than anything ever produced. This aspiration, combined with his background in engineering, led him to an intensive study of aerodynamics, and composite aircraft construction. He hypothesized that a low-drag, aerodynamic body shape could be achieved without sacrificing comfort, drivability or safety.

What emerged, after much designing, conceptualizing, and constructing, was a prototype two-seat, three-wheeled vehicle. This first operating prototype achieved a stunning 230 miles per gallon, Building on this success, Steve expanded his Aptera team and created the Aptera Typ-1, which has been re-designed, re-engineered, and refined into a production ready vehicle. We are excited to announce that the Aptera Typ-1 is now available for reservations

Aptera chief Steve Fambro, in his company’s latest newsletter, tells us they are building “lots of cars”. Hooray! And then crushing them. Oh noes! We know this has been done to electric cars by the likes of GM and Toyota before and now Aptera admits it has joined the pulverizing parade. Have they gone to the dark side? Well, no. It’s all being done in the name of increasing safety. You see, despite not having to crash test their three-wheeled Typ-1 (because it is defined as a motorcycle by the only state - California - they have immediate plans to sell them in), they are attempting to make the doors and roof of their vehicle much stronger than what is required of a typical car. As Fambro states, “We want the Typ-I to be renowned not only for its remarkable performance and efficiency, but its safety too.”

Besides addressing their safety ethos, the newsletter also contains a mini-bio of three of their employees as well as word of their most recent hire, Neil Hanneman. Links to press articles and their latest video are there, as are plans for future hires. Andy Hillenburg is back

before we start
let us see who Andy Hillenburg are:
He won the state quarter midget championships in 1975-1979. Hillenburg won the ARCA Super Car Series Championship in 1995, with 3 time ARCA Champion Bob Dotter as Crew Chief. He won the 1995 and 1997 Daytona ARCA 200, the premiere event in the series.
He served as a test driver for the IROC series. He competed in the 2000 Indianapolis 500, finishing 28th, and has sixteen Winston Cup starts nine Busch Series starts and four in the Craftsman Truck Series

now he is back :

Congratulations to ARCA RE/MAX Series car owner and former driver Andy Hillenburg for bringing Rockingham back to life.

Same goes for Joey Logano for winning in his first ever ARCA event at the wheel of a Venturini Motorsports prepared, Joe Gibbs sponsored Chevy. The soon-to-be 18 year old Gibbs phenom decimated the field and lapped all but 4 other cars on the way to the win.

There’s one remaining question I have after the checkered flag fell Sunday. If a race is held at a resurrected Rockingham Speedway will anyone see it?

The apparent answer is not only no, but a resounding NO when taking into account the number of “fans” dressed as vacant seats Sunday.

Was this the same track that was dropped from the NASCAR circuit in favor of bigger tracks with bigger grandstands in 2004? I think so.

Was this the same track that a multitude of fans of the track and it’s unique brand of racing was very much lamented at it’s passing? I think so.

Was this the very same track upon its demise in 2004 spawned a loud vociferous group of fans that campaigned for someone, anyone to bring it back to life? I think so.

So where the hell were they?

Where were these so-called “fans” when the green flag flew, the stands to be charitable, were one third full. That’s 20k at a place that holds 60k. The remainder of the math problem is left as an exercise for the reader.

No excuses. I don’t want to hear about this being an ARCA event vice NASCAR. I don’t want to hear about gas prices, hotel bills or any other such excuses that have been used since NASCAR opened it’s season at Daytona.

This was THE ROCK after all, you asked for it and got it, so where were you?

To be clear, I never expected a 60k sellout. But the least one could have hoped for, and Andy might admit to it if his feet were held to the fire, was 30k, or half full.

Didn’t happen not even close, for an event that has been pimped for months, billed as the new signature event for the circuit, the longest miles wise in series history and featuring many of the best of the youngsters that are on the development ladder to NASCAR’s three top series’.

Sorry, I fail to see any valid excuses, not after 4 years of whimpering and whining over the last few years.

Lamborghini cuts down on Audi parts

Lamborghini has been getting criticism about the Gallardo sharing too many characteristics with the Audi R8. Now because of this Lamborghini has decided that no more than 20 per cent of Audi parts will go into new models.

Lamborghini president Stephen Winkelmann said that “We have an internal rule that in future common parts will never exceed 20 per cent, In the future, we will always work together just on the hidden parts — parts that will not touch the DNA of Lamborghini. That could include things like the electrical platforms that need high investment, or hoses and filters, but we have to safeguard against too much of it.”

The new Gallardo LP560/4’s V10 is made in the same factory as several Audi engines. Lamborghini had a quality benchmark with Audi, where they got the best parts the fastest for cheap from Audi.

Lamborghini says that the customers don’t really mind about the origin of the minor parts.
